Stunning Ormolu and Sevres Porcelain Boudoir Antique French Clock

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1870 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A fine and stunning original antique French boudoir clock. It is beautifully made of ormolu (finely gilded bronze), very well modelled and chased, and mounted with exquisite Sèvres style porcelain. The ormolu is in stunning, untouched, original condition. Porcelain has a blue ground and is delicately painted with a delightful scene of Amor as a child about to release a bird, symbolic of love, with a young woman.

To the top is a large urn, painted with a scene of the young woman in a romantic country setting. The dial is beautifully decorated with delicate overglaze gilt decoration. The porcelain is signed to the rear. Please note that this type of clock does not have a glazed front door.

The French movement is of very high quality and has the clockmaker's mark on the movement backplate. Pendulum is a replacement. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. It runs for 8 days on one wind and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link or paste the following into your browser: https://www.facebook.com/DragonAntiques/videos/2061636647622136

Condition of the case is superb, gilding is in original condition with a clean and bright finish. The porcelain is in good condition, some wear to the overglaze decoration and also some wear to the blue ground. There are some chips around the winding holes. Some of the red and white applied jewels are missing. This is a fine and very decorative clock to add to your collection.

The firm of Richard and Co was founded in Paris in 1848 and added a branch in London in 1857. (Carriage Clocks, Charles Allix). The company continued until 1881.

Richard and Co mark on the movement back plate along with the case number "10" This is also marked on the rear of the case.

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

A French ormolu mantel clock is a decorative tabletop timepiece featuring cast bronze or brass gilded with gold, often embellished with hand-painted porcelain panels. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these clocks were created as statement decorative pieces for salon mantels and boudoirs.

These clocks typically combine a cast gilt-bronze or gilt-brass case with fine porcelain panels, often styled after the Sevres manufactory. The dial features enamelled Roman numerals, and internal clockwork mechanisms were constructed using brass and steel components.

Authentic period pieces display detailed bronze castings with hand-chased ornamentation, natural wear on high points of gilding, and finely executed enamel or porcelain paintings. They often feature stamped French clock movement makers on the backplate alongside serial numbers.

Place the timepiece as a central focal point on a fireplace mantel, a polished console table, or a dining room sideboard. To balance its opulent rococo design, pair it with minimalist contemporary artwork or place it against neutral, understated backdrops.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners that can strip original gilding. Keep the clock away from direct moisture, extreme temperature changes, and direct sunlight to protect both the painted porcelain panels and the movement mechanism.
