FAQs

French bedside cabinets, often referred to as commodes or nightstands, gained prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were designed for domestic utility in bedrooms, incorporating marble tops to provide a durable, heat-resistant surface for washing equipment and chamber pots before modern plumbing.

Authentic period pieces are constructed using solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, frequently featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers. The tops are fitted with natural slab marble, often secured within a moulded wooden frame to protect the stone edges.

Authentication involves examining construction techniques, such as hand-cut joinery, old-growth timber characteristics, and the type of fixings used. Hand-carved details, natural wear patterns on the wooden interior, and heavy, non-synthetic marble slabs typically indicate age.

This type of furniture adds texture and historical contrast to contemporary spaces. It can be utilised as a functional bedside surface or placed in a living area as an accent table, pairing well with minimalist lamps or metallic accessories to highlight the stone top.

Walnut surfaces should be dusted regularly with a dry cloth and treated periodically with natural beeswax to nourish the wood. Marble is porous and susceptible to acid staining, so coasters should always be used, and spills should be cleaned immediately using a pH-neutral cleaner.
