This Edwardian drinks cabinet is fashioned from solid mahogany in a warm brown tone. The piece measures 84 cm high, 77 cm wide and 41 cm deep. The design incorporates a removable top serving tray fitted with a spindle gallery and scroll-shaped handles, resting above a central drawer detailed with carved floral motifs. Below sits a cupboard with twin glass-panelled doors flanked by curved, open-slat side racks for bottle or magazine storage, all raised on turned tapering legs. In a contemporary home, the cabinet functions well in a living room, dining room or hallway as an occasional table, drinks station or side cabinet for entertaining guests. The structure remains solid and sturdy with minor age-related wear appropriate for a piece of antique furniture from this period.

FAQs

Drinks cabinets and mobile trolleys gained widespread popularity during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as social entertaining shifted into home drawing rooms and dining spaces. Crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany, these pieces provided dedicated storage for spirits, decanters, and glassware while facilitating convenient service.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed using solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers over hardwood frames. Construction features often include hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-turned spindles for galleries, brass fittings, and glass-panelled cupboard doors.

Authentic period examples feature genuine timber grain variations, consistent age-related patina, hand-carved or turned decorative elements, and original hardware. Inspecting drawer joints, underside construction, and glass characteristics can help verify period authenticity.

Position the cabinet against a focal wall in a dining room or living space, styling the top with crystal decanters and period glassware. The contrast of warm mahogany tones works effectively alongside both traditional backdrops and contemporary minimalist spaces.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain twice a year. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and finish discolouration.
