Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bergere is an enclosed upholstered armchair with a wooden frame, originating in France during the early 18th century. Over subsequent centuries, various revivals adapted the style using different woods such as mahogany and oak.

Traditional bergere chairs feature a solid hardwood frame, most commonly mahogany, walnut, or beech, combined with hand-woven cane panels on the back and sides. They typically include a loose down-filled or sprung seat cushion upholstered in traditional textiles.

Authentication involves examining the joinery for period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut tenons and dowels. Signs of age include natural oxidisation of the wood, hand-woven cane irregularities, and wear consistent with historical use rather than artificial distressing.

An antique bergere chair works well as a statement reading seat in a living room or bedroom, contrasting effectively against contemporary minimalist furniture. Pairing the classic wood frame with modern textured fabrics or neutral upholstery bridges historical and contemporary aesthetics.

Preservation requires keeping cane work hydrated by occasionally wiping it with a damp cloth to prevent brittleness and cracking. Furniture should be kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and the wood should be treated periodically with appropriate conservation wax.
