Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Penwork is a decorative technique that gained popularity during the late Georgian and Regency periods in the early nineteenth century. It involves applying black shellac or lacquer to timber and drawing intricate classical, botanical, or oriental motifs using India ink and fine pens.

These cabinets were typically built with solid hardwoods such as pine or mahogany as a base, coated in black japan varnish or lacquer, and detailed with India ink. Doors often featured gathered silk fabric panels, complemented by cast gilded brass or lead feet and mounts.

Authentic Regency penwork shows light surface wear, natural crazing in the varnish layer, and subtle variation in the hand-drawn ink lines. Original drawer linings, period dovetail joinery, and natural age oxidisation on internal metalwork also confirm authenticity.

Place the cabinet against a neutral wall to highlight its contrasting black and gold palette. It pairs well with contemporary artwork, understated table lamps, and minimal decorative ceramics to ground a modern hallway or living space.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the black varnish from cracking and the pleated silk panels from fading. Dust softly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid chemical polished or liquid cleaners on ink surfaces.
