Regency tea caddies were crafted during the early 19th century when tea was a highly valuable commodity, necessitating secure, lockable storage containers to protect the precious leaves from theft or dampness.

These boxes typically utilised dense tropical hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany, often featuring intricate veneer work, brass escutcheons, wooden bun feet, and carved mouldings, housing internal lidded compartments.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, older secondary wood linings, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, and natural oxidisation and wear consistent with age.

Such decorative objects add warmth and historical texture when placed on a sideboard, console table, or desk, serving as functional surface styling that contrasts well with clean contemporary lines.

Keep the wood conditioned using microcrystalline wax, avoid placing the object in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and clean gently with a dry, soft cloth.
