Victorian button back armchairs typically feature deeply tufted upholstery, curved wooden frames, low profiles, and turned legs often fitted with castors, reflecting the comfort and ornate aesthetic of the 19th century.

These chairs were traditionally built with sturdy hardwood frames such as mahogany, walnut, or beech, often incorporating iron support springs, horsehair stuffing, and heavy woven fabric or velvet upholstery.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-tied coil springs, traditional stuffing materials like animal hair, and hand-turned wooden components showing natural ageing and wear.

Pairing a traditional button back chair with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a striking contrast, allowing the historical piece to serve as an accent while grounding the modern design scheme.

Protect the fabric from direct sunlight to prevent fading, vacuum gently with a low-suction brush attachment, and occasionally condition exposed wooden elements with appropriate beeswax or furniture polish.
