Kashmiri papier-mache, known locally as Kar-i-Qalamdani, is a traditional handicraft originating in Kashmir during the 15th century, traditionally used to decorate pen cases and boxes with intricate miniature painting.

Authentic pieces are crafted from compressed paper pulp or layered paper waste, smoothed with plaster, painted by hand with natural mineral and vegetable pigments, and finally sealed with a protective lacquer.

Authenticity is determined by examining the fine detail of the hand-painted miniature motifs, the natural ageing and craquelure of the surface lacquer, and the weight and texture characteristic of traditional paper-mache construction.

This type of item can be displayed on a coffee table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece to introduce colour, historical texture, and global craftsmanship into a contemporary scheme.

Preserve the piece by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth without using chemical cleaners or water.
