This is probably the best one of these boxes I have come across. The original sweet contents long since gone, but it is full of small shells with labels. These may have been brought back from The Grand Tour as souvenirs. Not sure if the labels are with the correct shells. The condition of the box is excellent commensurate with age and use.

French dragee boxes were traditionally used to hold luxury sugar-coated almonds gifted during weddings, christenings, and high-society celebrations, often featuring exquisite miniature artwork on the lids.

These boxes typically utilise brass, gilt bronze, or base metals combined with hand-painted porcelain plaques, miniatures under glass, or papier-mache, often framed by beaded or chased metal rims.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-executed brushwork on the central miniature, genuine oxidisation and wear consistent with age on the metal mounts, and traditional construction methods such as hand-cut bezels.

Placed on a mantelpiece or side table, these small objects add a touch of historical elegance and visual interest when displayed alongside contemporary minimalist decor.

Keep these items out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the hand-painted miniature, and clean the metal components gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes.
