Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The William IV period spans from 1830 to 1837, serving as a transitional phase between Regency and early Victorian styles. It is characterised by robust classical proportions, heavy architectural forms, and a strong revival of Grecian and Roman motifs.

Frames from this era were typically constructed from pine or hardwood substrates, finished with gesso and water-gilt gold leaf. Corner blocks and decorative architectural elements like columns were frequently carved or moulded to add depth and structural presence.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-applied gold leaf with subtle craquelure, foxing or oxidisation within the silvering of the original glass plate, and traditional joinery methods such as pegged or slot construction on the reverse.

Placing a gilded historical mirror against a moody, matte-painted wall creates a striking contrast that highlights its reflective qualities and craftsmanship. It serves as a strong focal point in modern living spaces or entrance halls.

Giltwood is extremely delicate and water-soluble; it should only be cleaned with a dry, soft ostrich feather duster. Avoid commercial chemical sprays and keep the item away from direct sunlight and high humidity fluctuations to protect the fragile leaf finish.
