Painted Long Case Clock

18th century
For Sale by Hedley Wilson
Description

A late eighteenth century painted long case clock, with an unusually small break arch movement

The case, as was quite usual with some provincial clocks, is painted in a dark red. Dark colours were favoured, as less likely to show the effects of candle and fire smoke.

The single sheet silvered brass dial is unsigned, and has a subsidiary seconds dial. It has a timepiece movement, so does not strike the hours.

A particularly elegant and small clock, standing only 7' 6" high

c. 1800

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, also commonly referred to as a tall-case or grandfather clock, is a free-standing, weight-driven pendulum clock housed inside a tall wooden casing that originated in the mid-17th century.

The exterior casings were primarily constructed from solid timbers like oak, pine, or mahoganyfrequently finished with varnish, paint, or veneerwhile internal clockwork mechanisms were precision-crafted from brass and iron.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut brass movement gears, hand-engraved or painted dials, cast brass spandrels, and original wear patterns on the casing consistent with historical age.

A longcase clock serves as a focal architectural accent when placed in an entry hall, stairwell landing, or formal dining space, providing strong vertical balance alongside contemporary furnishings.

Position the clock away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood movement or paint flaking, dust the casing gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
