Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region of Japan and was exported via the port of Imari starting in the 17th century. It is defined by its characteristic colour scheme combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red, gold, and enamel details.

Authentic Imari pieces are crafted from fine kaolin porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. Decoration is applied in stages, combining underglaze blue brushwork with overglaze enamel pigments and hand-gilded embellishments.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-painted brushwork with slight variances, asymmetrical reserve panels, a smooth glaze finish, and visible firing marks or slight wear on the unglazed foot rim.
