FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and exported via the port of Imari. It is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamel and gilding.

These pieces were potted using white kaolin clay, painted with underglaze cobalt blue, and fired at high temperatures. Subsequently, overglaze enamels in red, green, and gold gilding were painted onto the glaze and fired a second time in a lower-temperature kiln.

Authentic pieces display distinct hand-painted brushwork with slight variances in glaze texture, visible foot-rim wear, underglaze blue undertones, and complex panel designs depicting foliage, mythology, or historical figures.

An Imari vase acts as a vibrant focal point when positioned on a dark timber sideboard, within an eclectic entryway display, or alongside contemporary minimalist decor to contrast textures and historical richness.
