The ground with classical motif decoration, inset hand painted panels depicting blossom trees. Handles to either side with mythical monkey style heads.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and shipped from the port of Imari. Originating in the 17th century, these ceramics are characterised by dense, colourful decoration using underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gold gilding, and enamel.

Pieces were shaped from local crushed porcelain stone and fired initially at high temperatures with an underglaze cobalt blue design. Artisans subsequently applied overglaze enamels, iron-red pigments, and leaf gold gilding before performing a secondary, lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic 19th-century Imari displays heavy porcelain body weight, slight blue-grey cast to the unpainted white glaze, and hand-painted variations in decoration. Overglaze enamels often show subtle texture under cross-lighting, and gilding may exhibit minor age-related rubbing or oxidation.

Large Imari ceramics function as focal accent pieces on sideboards, entry console tables, or inside alcoves. The dark cobalt blue and warm iron-red palette pairs effectively with neutral wood furniture, contemporary minimalist backdrop colours, or classic brass interior fittings.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush to prevent abrasive dirt accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, immersion in warm water, or rubbing overglaze gilding, as enamel and gold leaf can wear off with aggressive contact.
