Japanese Meiji Parquetry Scholars' Box

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Sinclairs Antiques and Interiors

This charming Japanese Meiji scholars'' box is in fantastic antique condition. The exterior features intricate parquetry decoration made from various woods, complemented by metal handles and decorative hinges. The item comprises two cabinets with a total of seven drawers and carry handles. The top can be removed, allowing the cabinets to be separated and the top inserted between them to form a desk, which Japanese scholars would kneel at to work. As with all antique items, there are some imperfections, such as a missing drawer handle, but this only adds to its character. The box boasts amazing colouring and patina, making it a fabulous item to adorn any desk or table. It would also make a wonderful jewellery box or makeup station.
