Set of 4 Antique War Department Elm Hoop Back Chairs

1920 - 1940
Description

A good set of 4 hoop back dining chairs with shaped elm seats. They stand on turned legs joined by H-stretchers. One is slightly darker than the other three but they go well together as a matching set.

They were originally made for the military and have various stamps below the seats including the Crows Foot and 'WD' below a crown which stands for War Department. They would have likely been used in the Officer's Mess and are very solidly constructed.

The chairs stand approximately 33" (84cm) high and 17 3/4" (45cm) deep. The seats are 14 1/2" (37cm) wide and 18" (46cm) high.

They are all in good condition and are strong and sturdy with no major damages. There are some minor signs of age and use, some marks and light knocks on the seats and around the legs but nothing detrimental and they have a lovely patina. They have been gently cleaned and polished and are ready for use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
