Chairs Victorian Mahogany1840 James Ditcham East Anglia

19th century
Description

Here we have a stunning set of early Victorian Mahogany East Anglian bar back dining chairs. The chairs are fresh to the market and come direct from the cabinet makers descendants. The maker is James Ditcham cabinet maker from Great yarmouth. You will see i have provenance from the family of his existance which the buyer can have. You will see that by this time 1886 from the marriage certificate that James Ditcham was already deceased. The family story that is attached to these chairs is as follows. James Ditcham promised his wife these chairs after they were married in 1826 and the pieces were cut and ready to make. As payed work was more important the chairs were not assembled until 1840. The table i have for sale is from the same family and was a wedding gift in 1827. The chairs are stunning they have fantastic colour and patina and are in as good a condition as i have seen a set. There are two carvers with delicious scrolled arms and six chairs. The chairs are incredibly comfortable and made to the highest standard. The front legs are beautifully turned and the rear gently swept along with the generous back and seat you can tell these are a chairmakers chair. He has made these chairs without any constraints of a comissioned piece and produced an elegant chair which is also perfect to sit on. A stunning rare set of chairs with fantastic provenance ready for your home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
