FAQs

A tea caddy is a small box or container designed to store loose tea leaves securely. During the Georgian period, tea was an expensive commodity, so caddies were often fitted with locks to protect the valuable contents.

Antique tea caddies were crafted from fine timbers such as mahogany, rosewood, burr walnut, and exotic veneers like partridge wood. They typically featured dovetail joints, internal compartments with foil lining, and delicate stringing or escutcheons made of ivory, bone, or brass.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, construction methods, interior foil linings, and lock mechanisms. Hand-cut dovetails, period-appropriate brass or ivory escutcheons, and natural timber ageing are key indicators of age and origin.

An antique tea caddy serves as a sophisticated decorative accent on surfaces like a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf. Its rich timber tones add warmth and historical texture to contemporary or traditional living spaces.

Preservation requires keeping wooden boxes out of direct sunlight and away from extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent timber splitting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of appropriate beeswax help maintain the finish.
