Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A tea caddy is a small box or container designed to store tea securely. During the Georgian era, tea was an expensive and luxury commodity, so caddies were frequently fitted with locks to protect the valuable contents from domestic staff.

These pieces were typically constructed from high-quality hardwoods like mahogany, rosewood, or burl veneers, often featuring intricate stringing, brass handles, and ivory or bone escutcheons. Interior compartments frequently included foil linings and fitted wooden lids.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, patination, hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware, and the presence of handmade secondary woods inside the compartments. Signs of age-appropriate wear and oxidisation on the metal elements are also key indicators.

An antique tea caddy serves as a sophisticated accent piece that can be displayed on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf to add texture, history, and warmth to a room.

To preserve the wood and finish, keep the caddy away from direct sunlight and heat sources which can cause the veneer to crack or warp. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally apply a neutral microcrystalline wax to nourish the antique surface.
