Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular furniture traditions where spindles and legs were wedged directly into a solid sculpted wooden seat.

Traditional English Windsor chairs were typically constructed using a combination of timbers, utilising strong hardwoods like yew, ash, or elm for the seats, bentwood for the hoops, and beech for the turned legs and spindles.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved saddle seats, wedged tenon joints visible on the top of the seat, tool marks from adzes and drawknives, and natural patina consistent with age and wear.

An antique Windsor chair can be used as a standalone accent piece in a modern study or paired with a minimalist dining table to create a contrasting, layered aesthetic.

Maintain antique wooden furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and occasionally nourish the surface with traditional beeswax.
