Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

North Italian giltwood furniture from the 18th century is recognised for its dramatic Rococo curves, intricate carving, and water gilding applied over carved timber. Influenced by both French Louis XV forms and Venetian ornamental traditions, these pieces often feature elaborate scrolls, shell crestings, and asymmetrical motifs.

Traditional giltwood chairs were carved by hand from wood such as pine or lime, coated with multiple layers of chalk gesso, and smoothed. Fine gold leaf was subsequently applied using water-gilding techniques, with upholstered seat panels fitted directly into the carved frames.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, irregularities in the underlying gesso, and natural wear where the reddish clay bole shows through rubbed gilding. Indications of age also include peg construction on rear frame joints and historical repairs to structural elements.

A pair of giltwood side chairs can be positioned flanking a contemporary console table or arranged in an entryway to create a balanced focal point. The detailed gilding and carved silhouette offer architectural texture when paired with neutral backgrounds or modern art.

Giltwood surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water that can dissolve the water-soluble gesso layer. Furniture should be kept away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent the gilding from flaking.
