The Adam style is an 18th-century neoclassical design movement pioneered by the Adam brothers, characterised by classical motifs, symmetry, lightness of form, and inspiration drawn from ancient Rome and Greece.

These mirrors are typically constructed from a carved wood base, such as pine or gesso-coated hardwoods, finished with applied gold leaf or gold paint over a bole layer.

Authentic pieces often display hand-carved details, genuine foxing or oxidation on the antique mirror glass plates, traditional joinery, and natural wear patterns on the gilding consistent with age.

Placing an ornate giltwood mirror above a contemporary sideboard or minimalist fireplace creates a striking focal point that contrasts historical craftsmanship with modern clean lines.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that can damage the delicate gold leaf. The glass can be cleaned sparingly with a lint-free cloth and mild glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than the mirror.
