Description

An absolutely magnificent antique Irish Georgian period walnut and leather armchair. This was made in Ireland, we would date it to around the 1750-1780 period.

This is the finest example you could hope to see, widely copied and rarely seen in its original form.

The solid walnut frame is exquisitely carved with eagle head motifs on the arm rests and also on the knees. The knees also have acanthus leaf carving, the cabriole shaped legs terminate in claw and ball feet.

This has a gorgeous, sweeping shape to the frame and it is very comfortable.

We have had the frame re-polished to a very high standard, and we have had it re-upholstered in hand coloured leather. The original horse hair stuffing remains inside the upholstery.

The condition is excellent, this is a museum quality piece.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

The Irish Georgian style, prevalent during the 18th century, is characterised by robust proportions, heavy carving, and distinct regional interpretations of English classical designs, often incorporating motifs like masks, eagles, and elaborate cabriole legs.

These armchairs were traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like walnut or mahogany, joined using mortise and tenon techniques, and upholstered in top-grain leather secured with brass or iron tacks.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, hand-cut joinery, tool marks on the underside, and natural oxidisation and wear patterns consistent with 18th-century craftsmanship.

An antique leather armchair can serve as a focal point in a contemporary study or living room, pairing well with minimalist architecture and neutral textiles to highlight its historical texture and form.

Antique leather should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and treated periodically with specialist leather conservation waxes or microcrystalline wax to prevent drying and cracking.
