FAQs

A writing slope is a portable desk featuring a hinged, angled writing surface that opens to reveal internal storage compartments for stationery, inkwells, and pens, which became highly popular during the Victorian era.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwood foundations like mahogany or pine, veneered in exotic timbers such as coromandel or calamander, and frequently embellished with brass stringing, escutcheons, and mother-of-pearl inlay.

Authenticity is determined by examining internal construction markers such as dovetail joints, hand-cut screws, secondary woods like cedar or mahogany inside compartments, and the natural ageing and patina of the wood and brass hardware.

An antique writing box can be displayed closed upon a console table, desk, or bookshelf to add texture, warmth, and historical interest to a contemporary living space or study.

Preserve coromandel and exotic wood veneers by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
