A rummer is a large, sturdy drinking glass that originated in the late 18th century and remained popular through the 19th century. Initially used for serving rum, punch, or ale, they are characterised by their stout bowls and short stems.

These glasses are typically hand-blown from lead glass, which gave them a heavy feel and high refractive index. The lower portions often feature wheel-cut fluting, panel cutting, or moulded designs.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the underside of the base, minor irregularities from hand-blowing, and surface wear consistent with age. Lead crystal of this period also has a distinct resonant ring when tapped gently.

Antique rummers can be used for serving after-dinner digestifs or styled open on a sideboard to add historical texture to a tablescape. Their robust proportions also make them suitable for holding small floral arrangements.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing and sudden temperature changes. They should be dried immediately with a lint-free cloth to prevent water spots.
