Description
A fine matching pair of early 19th century George III English Glass Rummers. They have large ovoid bowls above thin capstan stems which have upper blades. Conical feet with snapped pontils.
Historical Context
Capstan were introduced in c1800. On Rummers and Ales, the stems at that early time were quite thin (around the same thickness as a standard plain stem from the mind 18th century), however, as the century progresses, the stems become progressively thicker and by the time we get to the early 20th century examples, when they were still used as a stem, they can be more than twice as thick and quite clumsy in comparison.
