Victorian Elm Bar Back Windsor Chair

19th century
Description

A good example of an antique Windsor Bar-Back carver chair dating from the mid to late 19th century. It has a shaped elm seat with curved arms supported by turned spindles. It has a curved back with central turned bar and stands on turned legs joined by a H-stretcher.

The rear of the seat is stamped with the maker's initials J.G

The chair stands approximately 36 1/2" (93cm) high and it is 21 1/4" (54cm) wide across the arms. The seat is 17" (43cm) deep and 17" (43cm) high.

It is in good original condition and is strong and sturdy with no major damages. There are signs of age and use and some marks and light knocks on the seat and around the legs but nothing detrimental. There are some minor signs of historic worm which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the chair structurally or aesthetically. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
