Exquisite Antique Restored Hand Carved Grandfather Clock Case Depicting a King

18th century
Description

delighted to offer for sale this one of a kind, fully restored, hand carved antique English longcase grandfather clock case depicting a King’s Sovereign portrait

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price

What a find, I purchased this piece maybe 8-10 years ago and it has sat waiting all this time for restoration, whomever removed the clock movement did so with little care and damaged the top of the piece, as such it has been fully restored to gallery condition and is now ready to accommodate a new movement

I saved this piece because clearly the carving is very old and was conducted by an exceedingly fine craftsman, the Sovereign portrait of a King is very Regal and adds a sense of occasion to such a piece, the case is also decorated with what looks like English Tudor Rose’s which date to the 15th century, I’m really unsure exactly how old it is but based on other examples, it looks to be Georgian circa 1780 possibly earlier

Condition wise as mentioned it has been fully restored with new glass, all timber issues addressed and then lightly washed back and French polished being sure to retain all the period patina and charm

Dimensions

Height:- 247.5cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Longcase clock cases emerged in the mid-seventeenth century to enclose the weight and pendulum mechanism of floor clocks. During the nineteenth century, revival movements led craftsmen to embellish oak cases with heavy hand-carved figures, heraldic imagery, and foliate patterns inspired by earlier Renaissance and Gothic designs.

Historically, these cases were constructed using solid European oak, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joints. Carvings were executed directly into the timber by hand, using gouges and chisels to create deep relief figures and decorative mouldings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tool marks, unevenness in deep relief carving, and natural timber shrinkage around panel joints. Age-appropriate patination, dark oxidisation in recessed areas, and historic peg construction further indicate genuine age.

A heavily carved timber case functions as a structural focal point when placed against neutral or muted walls. Balancing the dark oak with clean-lined modern furniture creates an engaging visual contrast between historic texture and contemporary minimalism.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry brush to clean recessed carved areas without scratching the finish. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the oak and maintain stable environmental humidity to prevent timber movement.
