A Set Of Eight Arts And Crafts Walnut Dining Chairs In The Manner Of Philip Webb, 1860's

£550    $673    €652
A smart set of chairs in original, structurally sound condition, requiring a tidy up.

It is interesting to compare the design of this set to the ebonised armchair designed by Webb and held at Kelscott Manor. I have a closely related library chair sourced in the Angus area that I thought could have been part of the commission for the enlargement of the library at Cortachy Castle undertaken by Webb for the seventh Earl of Airlie, (the thirteenth Earl of Airlie kindly replied to my enquiry to say he didn''t recognise the chair).

So there it is, a very brief potted history imbued with a generous dash of conjecture.

The pair of armchairs are large and impressive the side chairs, neat and nicely proportioned.

Armchairs: 111cm high x 58cm wide x 61cm deep

In terms of condition, all the chairs are structurally sound, no breaks or repairs, but requiring a general surface tidy up. None of the chairs have the original rush seats. Four have quarter woven rope seats, (one armchair) and four chairs need more urgent repairs, two of these seats are slightly swollen and don''t currently fit easily into the frames.
