FAQs

Vitrine cabinets gained prominence in France during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving as sophisticated furniture pieces designed to display precious porcelain, curiosities, and collections.

These cabinets are typically constructed using fine hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, often featuring intricate floral marquetry, parquetry veneers, and cast gilt-bronze or ormolu mounts, topped with polished marble.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional mortise and tenon construction, fire-gilt bronze mounts rather than modern electroplated brass, and hand-beveled glass panes.

An antique vitrine provides a striking focal point in a modern setting when paired with minimalist surroundings, utilizing negative space inside the cabinet to highlight curated objects rather than overcrowding the shelves.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly to the wood; avoid harsh chemical cleaners on the ormolu mounts and marble top to protect the original finish.
