A Rare Pair Of English Beech And Laminated Beech Ocean Liner Deck Chairs
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Jeckyll & Co
With the original sectional cushions.
By turns these chairs can be viewed as thoroughly modern and also nostalgic, they are British to the core but also International. The basic form is inevitably related to the traditional Edwardian ''Titanic'' model, however the use plywood and their more relaxed geometry gives a lightness that has more in common with Marcel Breuer''s post Bauhaus long chair for Isokon and Pernilla daybeds designed by Bruno Mathsson in the early 1940''s, although their adherence to form and function is arguably more ''modern'' than either.
In 1925 Eileen Gray made reference to the influence of the form as well as romance associated with travel by sea naming one of her chairs ''Fauteuill Transatlantique'', which interestingly uses similar sectional cushions.
In terms of date, I am guessing 1920''s, the construction was very similar to some WWI campaign seat furniture I sold last year. By the early 1950''s the form had experienced a further, although not unive...rsal evolution, with P&O commisioning of Ernest Race to design the Neptune chair.
Condition: The frames are structurally sound. There is surface weathering and some isolated historic areas of woodworm (one small section of timber has been replaced).
Reliable transport throughout the UK can be easily arranged at cost price, please let me know if you would like a quote, or have any other questions.
