A Rare Pair Of English Beech And Laminated Beech Ocean Liner Deck Chairs

By turns these chairs can be viewed as thoroughly modern and also nostalgic, they are British to the core but also International. The basic form is inevitably related to the traditional Edwardian ''Titanic'' model, however the use plywood and their more relaxed geometry gives a lightness that has more in common with Marcel Breuer''s post Bauhaus long chair for Isokon and Pernilla daybeds designed by Bruno Mathsson in the early 1940''s, although their adherence to form and function is arguably more ''modern'' than either.
 
In 1925 Eileen Gray made reference to the influence of the form as well as romance associated with travel by sea naming one of her chairs ''Fauteuill Transatlantique'', which interestingly uses similar sectional cushions.
