Carved Gilt-wood Oval Girandole Wall Mirror, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

This 19th Century gilt-wood oval girandole is crowned with a stylised shell motif, a classic symbol of prosperity and a nod to the Rococo influence. Surrounding the shell, scrolling leaf decorations unfurl gracefully, adding a sense of movement and natural elegance. The girandole’s original mirror plate is encased within a moulded frame, which boasts a beaded edge and leaf decoration – a detail that catches the light and emphasises the mirror’s reflective quality. Descending towards the base, the girandole presents three scrolling candles sconces, their curves echoing the fluid lines of the leaves above. These sconces are designed to hold candles, which, when lit, would amplify the mirror’s luminosity and create a warm, inviting glow.Completing the design, the base is embellished with acanthus leaf decorations, a motif renowned for its use in classical architecture and decorative arts. The acanthus leaves bring a touch of grandeur and finish the girandole with a flourish sophistication. Overall, this girandole is not just a functional object but a piece of art that reflects the opulent aesthetic and skilled artisanship of the 19th century. It would have served as a focal point in a room, casting light and adding ornamental charm to the space it adorned.
