George III Cockpen Side Chair

An early George III mahogany ‘Cockpen’ side chair, in the Chinese Chippendale style. C.1765
 
With a rectangular open trellis back rest, pierced corner brackets and square chamfered legs.
 
Having a lovely original colour and patina.
 
One of the earliest instances of this unique ‘Chinese’ design is believed to be a collection of chairs found in Cockpen Church, Midlothian, Scotland, made in around 1755 for the Earls and Marquesses of Dalhousie of nearby Dalhousie Castle.
