A rare pair of late 17th century oak wainscot chairs. Very striking detail: grand cresting rail with very similar carved detail to the main panel and a further smaller panel with 4 carved scrolls, well carved ''ears'' and back framing with chequered inlay. The arms with some punched decoration, also notice the side seat edges decorated with a series of carved notches. Some of the detail can be seen on chairs in Tobias Jellinek''s Early British Chairs notably plates 62 & 84 (see the similar baluster legs and arm supports) indicating a date of circa 1680
