A fine George III Hepplewhite period open armchair, in beech wood with gilt decoration. C1780
The oval padded back, arm-rests and serpentine seat covered in a lightly worn cranberry velvet, with down swept arms and concave fluted apron. Raised on turned tapering fluted forelegs headed by crisply carved demi-paterae.
This chair is of very elegant proportions that closely follow the best of the Adam tradition.
A similar giltwood chair formerly at Langley Park, Norfolk is illustrated in Edwards, vol I, fig. 207.
(Reference 18th century English furniture- The Norman Adams Collection, page 68).
Both the chair and the upholstery are in very good condition.
