FAQs

Georgian dressing mirrors, often referred to as toilet mirrors, gained popularity in the 18th century as personal grooming became increasingly refined. They were typically placed on top of a chest of drawers or a dedicated dressing table in upper-class households.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany, frequently embellished with decorative stringing, crossbanding, or marquetry in boxwood or ebony. The mirror plate was traditionally held in a movable wooden frame supported by upright arms attached to a small base containing one or more small drawers.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawers and secondary woods like pine or oak used in non-visible areas. The mirror glass may show signs of age, such as slight oxidisation or foxing, and the brass fittings should display hand-finished characteristics rather than modern machine stamping.

A period mirror can be placed on a modern minimalist chest of drawers to create a striking contrast between old and new. It functions effectively as a desktop vanity piece or a decorative accent on a hallway console table.

Maintain the wood by applying a natural beeswax polish periodically to nourish the surface, avoiding silicone-based sprays. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent the wood from warping and the veneer from lifting.
