Superb Irish Writing Slope in Ash by Rodman and Co of Belfast

19th century
Description

A superb quality Victorian period Irish writing slope by Rodman and co of Belfast. The writing slope is in the most wonderfully figured wavy ash mounted with brass Gothic mounts. The interior of the box contrasts to the ash in dark coromandel wood. The interior is in perfect original condition even down to the velvet writing surface. The inkwells and fittings are of the finest quality and in excellent condition. The writing slope retains two labels for the Maker Rodman & co of Belfast. Rodman and Co were based on Donegal Street in Belfast and makers of fine quality gilt frames and boxes. This example is a wonderful quality writing slope in quite incredibly good condition, the only slight negative is that it lacks a key. C.1870

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian writing slope is a portable wooden box featuring an angled internal surface for writing, designed to store stationery, inkwells, and correspondence during travel or home use.

Nineteenth-century writing slopes were typically constructed from solid or veneered hardwoods such as ash, mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often reinforced with decorative brass strapwork and lined with velvet or leather.

Authentic Victorian writing slopes frequently feature flush-fitted brass corner brackets, original keyholes, hand-cut dovetail joinery, internal inkwell compartments, and makers marks stamped onto the lock mechanism.

An antique writing slope can be styled closed as a decorative accent on a desk, sideboard, or console table, or displayed open to showcase its internal leather writing surface and writing accessories.

To preserve a brass-bound writing slope, dust regularly with a clean microfiber cloth, apply high-quality beeswax polish to the timber, and avoid placing it near direct heat sources or in damp environments.
