This is an unusual example of an antique solid sterling silver snuff box.
It is clearly hallmarked inside the lid (with partial hallmarked on the rim) for Birmingham 1899, with the maker''s mark for Rose & Brough. The partnership lasted only two years.
Foliage and swags on the top surround an empty shield-shaped cartouche. The sides are also patterned and partially gilded. The gilding inside is in very good condition. The gilding outside has been rubbed away on the base corners and also, I think, from the top in parts. I suspect the cartouche was never gilded but some of the leaves are and some are not, so perhaps a little rubbing there. It is priced accordingly. The hinge is good and the silver undamaged.
