A Set Of Eight George III Mahogany Dining Chairs, C.1810

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Jeckyll & Co

A most unusual and distinctive set of chairs, probably Scottish.

Francis Braidwood, was an Edinburgh cabinet and chair maker of the period, best known for his use of a tied bow motif.* The mid-rails on this set are all inlaid in boxwood and ebony with a simplified bow design.

The chairs are all structurally rock solid, but would benefit from some superficial tidying up.One has a historic doweled repair to the top of one leg. The concave mahogany seats are original but most have the inevitable isolated splits typical of the design, and are strengthened by tape to the underside, two have minor repairs to the edges of the seat. All the chairs have brass fixtures to the yoke, and there are three detachable buttoned cushions present.

Lots of additional images available on request.

Elbow chairs: 85cm high x 58cm wide x 50cm deep

Handchairs: 84.5cm high x 54.5cm wide x 42cm deep

* The illustrations of the chair, the firm''s label and the caricature of Braidwood by John Kay...
