Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A clock garniture is a decorative three-piece set comprising a central mantel clock flanked by a matching pair of side ornaments, most commonly multi-arm candelabra or vases. Originating in 17th-century Europe and reaching peak popularity in 19th-century France, these unified suites were designed specifically to create a balanced arrangement atop grand fireplace mantels.

High-grade 19th-century French garnitures primarily utilise ormolu, which is cast bronze gilded with gold leaf or mercury amalgams. The clock dials often feature white enamel with painted Roman numerals, while bases and decorative elements may incorporate white marble, patinated bronze, or onyx accents.

Authentic 19th-century French ormolu displays precise hand-chasing, heavy bronze casting, and a warm, deep gold tone resulting from historical mercury gilding processes. Look for maker marks or foundry stamps near the clock movement or base, hand-cut screws, and subtle natural wear or light tarnish in crevices rather than uniform modern electroplated brightness.

A historical clock garniture acts as a focal architectural anchor when positioned centrally on a grand fireplace mantel, dining room sideboard, or console table. Balance the elaborate gilded scrollwork by placing the set against clean neutral backdrops, muted wall finishes, or stripped architectural plaster.

Gilt bronze should be dusted regularly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush to prevent dust accumulation in detailed chasing. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners, water, or brass polishes, as these can strip or damage the delicate gold layer; professional conservation is recommended for heavy tarnishing or movement restoration.
