Overmantel mirrors are traditionally designed to be hung above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring proportions and frames that complement the architecture of period reception rooms.

Authentic period frames typically utilise carved wood or composition ornament over a wooden base, finished with hand-applied gold leaf or gilt paint, housing silvered sheet glass.

Authentication involves examining the frame construction, backboards, fixings, and checking for signs of foxing, oxidation, or minor imperfections within the silvered glass plate.

Placing a large gilt mirror above a fireplace or anchoring it on a blank wall introduces reflective light and classical contrast to contemporary minimalist or transitional spaces.

Frames should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush to protect fragile leaf gilding, avoiding chemical cleaners or excessive moisture that can damage the finish.
