Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French ormolu and marble clocks became prominent during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly throughout the Louis XVI and Empire periods. Craftsmen combined finely chased fire-gilded bronze figures with solid marble bases to produce decorative timepieces for aristocratic residences.

These clocks typically feature cast bronze finished with gold mercury gilding, known as ormolu, set upon white Carrara or black marble bases. Dial faces are usually constructed from white enamel over copper with hand-painted Roman or Arabic numerals.

Authentic pieces display heavy hand-chased detailing, hand-cut screws, and original mercury gilding that shows soft wear rather than uniform modern electroplating. The bronze casting will be substantial in weight, and mechanical movements frequently feature French maker marks stamped on the back plate.

Position the clock as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece or a minimalist console table. Pair the piece with streamlined contemporary artwork or neutral textured walls to allow the gilded ornamentation to stand out without cluttering the room.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft bristle brush for intricate carved details. Avoid applying chemical cleaners, polishes, or water, as moisture and harsh solvents can strip the delicate gilding and stain porous marble.
