The Art Deco movement influenced the styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects. Even the everyday bedside cabinet, like this finely made English example from the late 1920s, was transformed to reflect the luxury and exuberance that became synonymous with the Deco period. Its curvaceous outline is very appealing and tactile, and the quality of the construction is reassuringly high - its mahogany drawer has been made using fine hand-cut dovetails and the cabinet's interior and back have been nicely finished. We also have what appears to be the original piece of plate glass that has protected its top. Time has been kind to this piece - the well-chosen and highly-figured walnut has mellowed leaving a myriad of warm and appealing tones. Now after being traditionally restored, its French polished surface is once again back at its reflective best.
