A Rare 18th Century George II Carved Cut Gesso and Giltwood Mirror, Circa 1730

Description

The acanthus egg and dart carved swan neck pediment is surmounted with a carved armorial cartouche flanked by opposing C scrolls on an egg and dart plinth. leading down to the acanthus-carved and punch-decorated frieze centred by a shell.

The original soft bevelled looking glass is set within a gadrooned frame further bordered with a concave leaf and floral border, flanked by cascading swags and passementerie.

Similarly, the punch decorated apron is centred by a well-drawn mask crowned with Prince of Wales feathers, flanked by scrolling acanthus and floral patera.

This is a fine example in an excellent state of preservation, retaining the original soft bevelled looking glass.

George II giltwood mirrors, originating from the early-to-mid 18th century, feature architectural outlines influenced by Palladian and Baroque design. Common elements include broken pediments, central crestings, shell carvings, and low-relief cut gesso work covered in genuine gold leaf.

These mirrors were constructed using a soft timber carcass, such as pine or deal, coated with layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and animal glue size. Intricate details were carved directly into the hardened gesso before water gilding was applied using thin sheets of gold leaf, often housing hand-blown mercury glass plates.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery marks on the reverse timber frame, natural oxidation or grey spotting in the mercury mirror glass, and subtle wear to the gold leaf where red or dark clay bole shows through on raised edges.
