Description

A fine Art Deco Maurice Adams corner display cabinet from the ‘Grosvenor’ range. Circa.1925.

Made in highly figured polished walnut, with three shelves to the top section, with two curved glass doors and it’s original working lock, key and two silvered handles. Below a cupboard with two shelves and a silvered handle to the curved door. Maker’s label to back.

All our furniture is professionally polished and restored where necessary. Our restorer has over 40 years of furniture restoration experience including 15 years living at Windsor Castle whilst restoring furniture for the Royal household, so comes highly recommended. This corner display cabinet is in showroom condition.

Maurice Adams saw himself as the natural successor to the great furniture makers of the eighteenth century and had ambitious plans for 20th-century British interior design. All Adams's furniture was made by hand in Gloucester and displayed in Adams's showroom in Portman Square, London.

This corner display cabinet, designed for the sitting room, was part of Adams's 'Grosvenor' range and could be made to fit any specification. The lower section was fitted with a cupboard which Adams suggested might store books or music.

The Grosvenor range was distinguished by its highly finished veneers. This emphasis on glossy veneers is characteristic of much of Adams's work. The designer praised the marble-like effect of veneers and their ability to exploit the 'natural beauty' of figured woods. The curvaceous shape of this cabinet display the veneers to maximum effect.

The V&A have a cabinet from the Maurice Adam’s Grosvenor range in their collection.

Art Deco furniture emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by sleek geometric shapes, streamlined forms, stylised motifs, and the extensive use of luxurious exotic veneers like burr walnut and macassar ebony.

Master cabinetmakers typically utilised solid secondary timbers core-wrapped in high-figure decorative wood veneers, complemented by polished glass panels, chromium or brass hardware, and intricate dovetail joinery.

Authentic period pieces feature period-correct construction techniques, aged patina within the internal secondary woods, genuine hand-polished lacquer or french polish finishes, and maker marks or stamps corresponding to the early 20th century.

Pairing this statement cabinet with minimalist surroundings, neutral walls, and contemporary lighting allows the rich wood grain and curvilinear geometry to stand out as a focal point.

Maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature away from direct sunlight to prevent veneer cracking or fading, and clean surfaces using a dry or barely damp soft cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
