An Anglo-indian Teak Armchair

Description

I'm not sure if this chair was made for the domestic or export market (and then retailed by Heals or Liberty). Modernism was certainly gaining traction in India from the 1930's. Preparation for Independence the following decade may have been significant as a designers perhaps made a conscious move away from familiar Colonial styles to a new modern aesthetic.

This chair anticipates the furniture of Pierre Jeanneret for Chandigarh in the 1950's, and clearly there are some similarities. It may be a simiilar example of the fushion between European designs and Indian craftsmanship. Interestingly, when George Nakashima arrived in India in the mid-1960's he admired the traditional use of exposed dowel joints as adhering to modern principles and a truth to the construction process.

Condition: Structurally sound and the cane seat is in good order. There has been a historic repair to the top of the left leg, and the front rails have later internal blocks, although these are not visible from above.
