English 18th Century Verge Bracket Clock

£3,450    $4,548    €4,087
A fine quality late 18th century mahogany BRACKET CLOCK in particularly good original condition. The case is of well-figured mahogany, with a ‘bell’ upper section surmounted by the cast brass carrying handle surrounded by four original gilt pineapple finials to the top. The glazed front door has twin fretwork ‘spandrels’ to the uppermost corners whilst the door itself features a beautifully moulded frame to the glass panel. To the sides are original silk-backed fretwork panels whilst the clock is raised on solid mahogany block feet.

The movement is of eight-day duration retaining its original verge escapement, striking hours on a bell and repeating the hours via a pull cord. The backplate is beautifully engraved with engraved brackets; original bob pendulum and upper bell. The layout of the dial is typical of the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, with ornate spandrels; matted centre; very fine original blued steel hands and engraved and silvered chapter-rings. To the arch is the “Strike/Silent” control and a date aperture can be found above “VI”.

This really lovely English Bracket Clock is signed by the maker: Samuel Goujon of London and is in perfect working order. Highly recommended and fully guaranteed for at least two years. Dimensions: 19ins high; 11ins wide; 7ins deep front-to-back. (48 x 28 x 17.5cms). c1770-1780

** Samuel Goujon (1752-1794) is recorded in Britten’s “Old Clocks & Watches and their Makers” as a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers who worked at 42 Newgate Street London 1768-1794. He is described as being a watch maker and a “tayman” …(?). He was probably of Huguenot extraction as a Jean Goujon was known as a watchmaker in Paris circa 1590. (The Huguenots fled France in the 17th century following persecution and established settlements throughout Europe and indeed in America and Africa.)
