Description

This fabulous eight day English fusee movement 'Bank' style mahogany clock with original bracket is an extremely rare piece from a famous maker. The 10" white dial is in excellent condition and signed 'F. Dent, 61, Strand, London no. 1472' dating the clock between 1857-60. The case has a door to each side, an applied foliate carved surround and is 18" high without the brackets and a similar width making it an imposing piece. The bezel has the original working lock and key and the movement has been recently overhauled and in excellent condition.

In 1841 the Dent family's revered ability to make the finest domestic timepieces brought the company a Royal Warrant as the official watch and clockmaker to Her Majesty Queen Victoria and Hrh Albert Prince of Wales. The Dent family also constructed 'Big Ben'.

F. Dent, 61, Strand, and 34 and 35, Royal Exchange, Chronometer, Watch, and Clock Maker, by appointment, to the Queen and Prince Albert; sole successor to the late E. J. Dent in all his patent rights and business of the above shops, and at the clock and compass factory at Somerset-wharf; maker of chronometers, watches, astronomical, turret, and other clocks, dipleidoscopes, and patent ships' compasses, used on board her Majesty's yacht. Ladies' gold watches, 8 guineas; gentlemens' 10 guineas; strong silver lever watches, £6 6s. Church Clocks, with compensation pendulum, £85.

This clock comes with my two year guarantee as standard.

Rather than trusting a courier of any sort I recommend collection or I can deliver regionally/nationally. If the brackets are removed I can also post this item tracked and insured. All antique clocks require delicate handling and specific setting up so it is far better for a dealer to meet a client and talk them through the process, or set the clock up for them, rather than leave the client struggling at the other end on their own.

Date of Manufacture

Clockwise has dated this Fusee Wall Clock to the 1860s.

A fusee wall clock is a time-measuring device featuring a fusee mechanisma conical pulley with a spiral groovewhich ensures even tension from the mainspring as it unwinds, leading to greater accuracy.

These clocks typically feature solid timber cases such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, brass gear movements, painted iron or wooden dial faces, and convex glass bezels.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-engraved movements, substantial brass plates, consistent wear on pivot holes, historical maker signatures on the dial, and traditional secondary woods inside the case.

Mount the clock as a central focal point on a plain, neutral wall to highlight its historic craftsmanship without overwhelming the modern decor.

Mechanical fusee clocks require professional cleaning and oiling every three to five years, along with careful handling during winding to prevent damage to the spring mechanism.
