Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of 19th-century Napoleon III cabinets in the French Chateau style is constructed from ebonised wood, brass, tortoiseshell, ormolu, and glass. Each piece presents a black body richly accented with gold-toned brass Boulle marquetry inlay and gilt-bronze mounts. The front showcases a single arched glazed door enclosing three internal shelves behind a light-coloured fabric lining, topped with a brass gallery rail and supported on small shaped feet. The detailed ornamentation includes elaborate scrolling brass patterns across the dark timber facade and decorative metal hardware fixed to the corners and frames. Each cabinet measures 145 cm high by 81 cm wide and 33 cm deep. Suitable for domestic settings such as a living room, study, or hallway, these display pieces provide enclosed storage and shelving for books, ornaments, or collections. They function well as standalone statement furniture against a wall, bringing historical character and formal French styling to traditional or eclectic interiors. Their vertical proportions suit rooms with standard ceiling heights while preserving floor space.

FAQs

Named after Andre-Charles Boulle, these cabinets feature intricate marquetry composed of brass and tortoiseshell inlaid into ebonised wood, a technique popularised in 17th-century France and revived during the 19th-century Napoleon III era.

Boulle technique combines sheet brass and pewter with natural tortoiseshell, applied over an ebonised hardwood structure and finished with cast gilt-bronze or ormolu mounts.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut brass marquetry, subtle variations in the tortoiseshell pattern, heavy gilt-bronze architectural mounts, and aged wooden backboards with historical construction techniques.

Positioning the pair symmetrically against a neutral feature wall creates a balanced focal point, juxtaposing elaborate French ornamentation against clean, contemporary lines.

Keep the cabinets away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent brass lifting or tortoiseshell cracking, dusting surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
