Antique Early 20th Century Oak Dentist's Cabinet | Claudius Ash

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century dentist's cabinet in oak by Claudius Ash & Sons of London, a rare and characterful piece of excellent quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and clever fitted storage.

The upper section has a mirrored cabinet door opening to a shelved interior, flanked by two quarter-round shelves within a shaped back with square finials. Below the top is a bank of six graduated drawers beside a fall front, lined with brass and supported on a chain, over a long frieze drawer and a pair of panelled cupboard doors opening to shelves. Every drawer and door is fitted with turned wooden knobs.

The cabinet bears the impressive Ash trade mark, "C.A.&S. London Reg'd England", one of the most famous names in British dental supply, and it stands on shaped bracket feet.

The oak displays a lovely figured grain with medullary ray flashes to the top and panels, and a warm, rich colour with a lovely mellow patina.

Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable and unusual dentist's cabinet, a perfect conversation piece and practical storage for a study, bathroom, hallway, kitchen or collector's room.

This Edwardian dental cabinet by Claudius Ash dates from 1920 and takes the form of a tall storage unit constructed from dark brown oak. The upper section contains a central mirrored door flanked by open quarter-round shelves, beneath a shaped cornice with square finials. The middle section holds a bank of six shallow drawers beside a fall front, positioned above a long frieze drawer and a pair of panelled cupboard doors in the base. Every door and drawer is fitted with a turned wooden knob, and the unit stands upon shaped bracket feet. The dark oak surfaces display a rich figured grain with natural medullary ray flashes. The cabinet measures 165 cm high, 75 cm wide and 35 cm deep overall, with a worktop height of 125 cm. In a contemporary home, this specialist storage piece works well in a study, bathroom, hallway, kitchen or collector's room to hold everyday items or display collections. The interior contains adjustable shelving behind the lower cupboard doors and the upper mirrored door. The timber shows a mellow patina developed over decades of use, maintaining the character and practical utility intended by the original manufacturer in London.

An antique dental cabinet is a specialized storage unit designed for dental professionals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to organise instruments, medicaments, and medical supplies.

These cabinets were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring multiple precision-fitted shallow drawers, glass panels, and brass or wooden hardware.

Authentic pieces typically feature specialized shallow drawer configurations designed for small hand tools, makers marks or plaques from historic medical suppliers, original locking mechanisms, and traditional joinery.

In contemporary settings, these cabinets serve as practical storage for jewellery, craft materials, office stationery, or bathroom essentials while providing a distinctive focal point.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber finish, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
